This gentleman bought the shoes alright, but if he were like you or me, he would have realized that there was something wrong the first time he tried them on. To top it off, he managed to wear these shoes for an almost continuous period of three months before a colleague pointed out that there was something wrong. That is when he came back to the store to lodge a customer complaints about the service offered to him.
As a rule, if he had brought the shoes back in a near new condition, we would have handed him a refund and considered the case closed. However in this particular case, the shoes were not only worn out. They were almost in tatters. And despite everything he only insisted upon his right to file a customer complaint and seek a refund. No matter how much I tried to explain to him politely that though he had purchased and taken home two left shoes, he should have brought the matter to our notice through customer complaints well in advance. And besides he nearly destroyed the shoes that would be of no use to us. Though his loss was one pair, our loss was in effect two good pairs of shoes.Except of course there was another customer who could ‘mistakenly’ purchase two right shoes!
In another case, there was this customer complaint with regards to the lady who bought an artificial mink coat and returned back to the store almost six months later to lodge a customer complaint. Want to know her issue? Well, she had been deceived into buying an artificial mink coat and wanted a refund. Needless to mention, the offending mink coat had been well used and was in fact the worse for wear. But nonetheless file a customer complaint she would.
At times there are customer complaint cases that I find extremely taxing. To help out someone who accidentally made a shopping gaffe is all fine. And the gratitude for such customers is well worth the initial hostility they show. Unlike customers who are determined to take stores for a ride and then demand on the right to file customer complaints to cover their own faults are the ones who get my goat. Even as I am all for encouraging customer complaints as a ration course of action, I find myself ever more reluctant to help out such people.
Often when I interview people for an article, a parent will ask me – ‘why do I need to read a parenting magazine?’ or ‘what can a magazine tell me that I don’t already know?’ or even ‘parenting is something I do by instinct – why should a magazine tell me what to do?’.
In some sense, it is true, isn’t it? Our parents did not read parenting magazines, or browse the Net for information, or attend parenting workshops – they still managed to bring us up OK.
But wait – our parents had another source of information and support that is denied to most of us today – the benefit of an extended family – grandparents, uncles and aunts and cousins who were ready with advice and tips from how to breast-feed a baby to what career your child should consider. In shrinking nuclear families that role has been taken over by magazines and the Internet.
Secondly, our parents lived in a world without much choice – kids went to the neighborhood school, probably learnt music or dance and managed to complete their education and then took traditional career paths – medicine, engineering, Arts, etc. They did not have to contend with IB or CBSE, Abacus and vocabulary lessons, tennis or karate. I am not even going to get into the range of career options available today! With the bewildering array of choices in front of us, from which diaper to is the best to which college to apply to for which course, we are forced to depend on advice and reviews to make sense of all our options.
Thirdly, our parents did not read books on seven habits of effective managers or magazine articles on interior decoration or browse the Net to look up what sickness a cold, cough and peculiar rash indicates. But, we do all that and more; our generation is information-hungry. We base the smallest of decisions on information, and support and validate our choices with reams of data from multiple sources. We actively look out for tips on how to get rid of dark circles – why would we be derisive about someone who looks for information on the so much more important area of parenting?! We live in the age of information, so how much ever we would like to believe that parenting should be driven by instinct, we cannot escape the fact that our decisions need to be based on information. And a good parenting magazine (like ours:) ) will bring that information to your doorstep (or fingertips) – information based on expert insights, proven parenting practices and fresh ideas from around the world.
Fourthly, the world has changed more rapidly in the past two decades that in any other time and this impacts how we rear our children. Lead — Just as you would write an article with the magazine’s style in mind, it can pay to take the time to do so with your query as well. In fact the opening of a winning query often reads like the lead or first part of the lead to the article.
So just as you would in your article, start your query with a good hook, such as an amazing fact, profound quote, intriguing anecdote, etc.
Summary — After a one or two sentence lead, tell the editor what this article is about, and how you plan to tell the story. Tell the editor what you have in mind for interviews and research sources.
Also weave in a mention of what you can personally bring to the article, including a credential, experience or something else that backs this up. Be confident but not arrogant, and always be courteous and respectful of the editor’s time.
Conclusion — After your summary, provide information such as estimated word count and date of completion, brief information about any art work such as photographs you have (generally not required), mention of any professional or noteworthy writing experience and credentials, whether you’ve included clips (published samples of your writing) and a direct request to submit the piece.
You need to do all of this on one page, so write the rough draft and then tighten until you’ve got your query down to a page and sounding good.
If you are a fiction writer, your query should follow pretty much the same process as the nonfiction query; except instead of summarizing the article you have in mind, you will summarize the plot (including conflict and resolution) and introduce main characters.
